Snap Payroll Tax Support Expansion

October 2012 - April 2013

As part of our goal to reach 200K users in 2 years, I created designs to bring payroll tax support from 50% to 90% of the US small business population. To do this, I worked closely with my PM and developer counterparts to learn about state payroll taxes and our technology stack to create the appropriate UI.

Within 6 months, I designed for 24 states and oversaw implementation for 19 states, getting us to 31 released states and supporting over 90% of the US small business population in their paycheck calculations

Compliance & Technology Stack

With the PM and developers on the team, we examined payroll tax laws and forms as well as our technology stack to determine the information we'd need to calculate paycheck taxes. This sometimes came in the form of lightweight prototypes.

Wireframes & Mockups

I created UI designs and developed new design patterns and interactions to gather necessary customer information. I conducted design reviews with the cross-functional team every week to catch potential problems early and drive conversations for sprint planning. By working very closely with the team, we quickly designed flows for 38 states in Adobe Fireworks.

Working with Engineers

For implementation, I created PDF workflows, screen mockups and assets for our developers. We also conducted "design QAs" to ensure that the designs were implemented correctly before submitting to the app store.

The Result

In 6 months, we designed payroll calculator workflows for 38 states and released 19 to the app store. With this rapid expansion, we supported over 50% of the US business population and established the appropriate design constructs to support all 50 states.
