Switch to QuickBooks is a PC desktop wizard to move accounting data from competitor products into QuickBooks Online. This tool is targeted towards accountants in our global markets and is the main global project in our QuickBooks Desktop migration initiative. I was tasked with redesigning the tool and accompanying website portal in preparation for beta release with 60 accountants in Australia, Canada and UK. As design lead for this project, I created and delivered web and desktop designs and assets and worked closely with marketing for a seamless release.
This tool and website is currently in beta release to 60 accountants in Australia, Canada and UK.
Techniques: workflows, wireframes, mockups, assets
Original Designs
There were several key issues with the original designs and flow - (1) navigation and inability to go back and forth, (2) confusing content, (3) visual and interaction misalignment with the QuickBooks brand, (4) cumbersome steps, and (5) cryptic error messaging.
Iterations
I worked very closely with my PM and developer counterparts to understand all the use cases and simplify the flow. I also worked on the visual design alignment. Since we were aligning to the QuickBooks Online design style but this tool is a PC desktop tool, I played with varying degrees of alignment.
Company Settings & Tax Code Mapping
This was the most cumbersome step in data migration - we asked users to go through a lot of context switching, from tool to QuickBooks Online for company settings adjustment (one by one) to tool to QuickBooks Online for tax code creation to finally tool to map these tax codes. I worked with the PM and developers to understand the technical limitations and create a more seamless experience with only one context switch.
End-to-End Beta Release Workflow
To visualize our beta release and drive conversations with PM, developers, marketing, customer care and business development, I created a workflow for our end-to-end beta release that showed each step our users had to go through.
Final Designs
In my final designs, I redesigned the flow and UI for the desktop tool and website portal. We also implemented Omniture tracking and the UserVoice widget API to collect quantitative and qualitative data for future improvements to the experience.
